Breath On A Cold Rainy Day

Breath is the voice of your soul (quote from a Throat Coat Tea Bag)

My voice is gone from cold and flu symptoms which leaves me irritated and annoyed. The best I can get at the moment is a faint whisper, and that is when I scream. Thankfully, it is also a cold rainy day, perfect for blankets and hot tea with tags that read, “Breath is the voice of your soul.”

It got me wondering about Scriptures that talk about breath. They’re everywhere! I invite you to sit with me as I share only a few of these verses with simple thoughts. Feel free to share your own insights in the comments or by email. I am always amazed at how the Holy Spirit speaks uniquely to individuals through the same passages.

I’ll get a fresh cup of hot tea while you get yours. I’ll meet you back here soon. ☕️

Lord, help us relax in Your presence as we visit with You through these Scriptures. Giver of Life, breathe now into our souls. Amen

"Then the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature." Genesis 2:7 ESV

Two words stand out this morning from the verse above. God Breathed. Imagine that! It makes sense given the fact that we are made in His image, and our very breath comes from Him. Yet… the fact that God Himself breathes is amazing. What happens when He breathes out? That question brought to mind a couple of other verses.

"The LORD merely spoke, and the heavens were created. He breathed the word, and all the stars were born." Psalm 33:6 NLT

Wow Kazow!!! The Lord breathed the word, and all the stars were born! Wow. Wow. Wow.

"At the blast of your nostrils the waters piled up; the floods stood up in a heap; the deeps congealed in the heart of the sea." Exodus 15:8 ESV

That’s some kind of blowing your nose!!! (which I’ve been doing a lot lately with cold stuff) God literally blew out of His nostrils, and the Red Sea split open for the Israelites to walk through on dry ground. Incredible.

"The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life." Job 33:4 ESV

Again, I listen for what comes to the forefront. God made me. For some reason, that is especially comforting. I settle into His design for my life with plans and purposes written in His dream journals before I was born. Even as He made me in the beginning, He is still creating within me, and through me, in deeds birthed out of creative wisdom and love. He is the Author and Finisher of my faith. He that began this good work in me, He will complete it.

"Your eyes have seen my formless substance; And in Your book were written All the days that were ordained for me, When as yet there was not one of them." Psalm 139:16 NASB
“For it is God Himself whose power creates within you the desire to do His gracious will and also brings about the accomplishment of the desire." Philippians 2:13 Weymouth Translation
"Looking unto Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith." Hebrews 12:2 KJV

As you can see, one portion of a Scripture leads to more and more. The depths of God’s goodness are unfathomable. I have gone from being crabby at the start of this writing to full of delight, even if I still cannot talk. That’s okay! I have breath that originated from God, and as King David said in Psalm 150:6

“Let everything that has breath praise the LORD! Praise the LORD!"
