Song Bird

Our song will arise even as the dawn arises through darkness of night.

Good morning!

I just stepped outside to say goodbye to my husband as he left for work. It is still dark and cold and the air is brisk with a bit of moisture. I am in my fluffy red robe that reminds me of Christmas and am still drinking my first cup of coffee with loads of half n half.

Somewhere in the trees, one.singular.bird was ready to start the day. She sang so loudly that, I thought she must surely have a microphone to her mouth! It was her good morning song to the world, and it was lovely to my heart.

I stood barefoot on the cold concrete as Jack’s car drove into the distance. Her song grew louder as the quiet became quieter. The other birds were still asleep or, at the very least, not ready to respond to her wake up call.

I let my imagination run wild in what this Song Bird might look like with a microphone to her mouth and an amplifier in the branches. Sleepy eyed birds slept in sleeping caps while wrapped in feathery blankets. They preferred to sleep while I pondered; Why was Song Bird’s voice so amplified in the stillness of dark before dawn?

Still barefoot in the cold, I stood… thinking… and listening… to one.singlular.bird singing in the branches as the world lie sleeping. My heart settled into her song and rested.

Song Bird’s amplifier was not one of man-made cords, wires, and electrical plugs to out-blast the noise of surrounding voices. Instead, her’s was an amplifier of embracing the stillness… of singing when it was dark… and rejoicing in her one.singular.song.

I wonder… Perhaps the best amplifier for our heart and voice is not found in out-shouting the ruckus of our day. Maybe it comes by leaning into stillness. It is here that we will hear the whispers of God. It is here that our song arises even as the dawn arises through the darkness of night…

Be still my soul… Trust in God…

“Go out and stand on the mount before the LORD.” And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low WHISPER. And when Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. And behold, there came a voice to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
