The Tension Rod of Hope

Hope is like a tension rod upon which we hang clothes in a closet. One end of the tension rod presses into the future, while the other end presses into the past. The tightness holds the rod in place and is (hopefully) strong enough to hang dreams and desires on.
Not all hope is equal, though. If you are going to place heavy weighted items on the rod, make sure your hope is firmly fixed.
“For it is for this we labor and strive, because we have fixed our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of believers.” 1 Timothy 4:10 NASB 1995If your hope is for someone to do exactly what you want, the way you want, and when you want it… You might end up with your tension rod of hope falling off. Trust me. I’ve been there and done that.
Perhaps your hope is based on getting a specific job that looks like a done deal, until it falls through. Maybe someone else gets the house you put a contract on. Those are big let downs, and it hurts. What then?
Well… hope, to me, is not so much about getting what I want all the time. It is about trusting that God will work something out for me that is good, even when I have been disappointed.
Firmly fixed hope presses into the character of God’s goodness. It grips into the fact that God is in our future preparing our arrival. He is in our past with mercy throughout. He is in our now, holding it all together.
We fix our hope on the Living God!May this living hope that comes from God fill your heart and soul with joyful strength in your everyday life.
For your encouragement, I share the song below written by my dear friend, Debra Amundson, and sung by Charlie and Jill LeBlanc.
